Beavers' defense steps up to the plate

Ben Wetzler gave up a run in the first, then blanked Texas A&M the rest of the way, and Danny Hayes drove in three runs to lead Oregon State to a 6-1 win Sunday night in Corvallis. The victory sends the Beavers into a best-of-three Corvallis Super-Regional against Kansas State starting on Friday or Saturday.

Wetzler allowed only four hits and struck out ten batters. He walked four, but settled in to a nice groove after the Aggies took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI-triple by Cole Lankford.

The Beavers tied the game with an unearned run in the fifth, then took the lead for good with a 2-out, 2-run double by Danny Hayes in the 7th.

Oregon State, designated as the visiting team in the game against the Aggies, added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Hayes singled home a run to make it 4-1, and Ryan Barnes and Kavin Keyes followed with run-producing singles.

Meantime, at the Eugene regional, the Ducks stayed alive by winning a pair of loser-out games Sunday. Oregon beat San Francisco 6-1 as Cole Irvin allowed only six hits and one run while pitching a complete game. He walked none and struck out nine. Tyler Baumgartner and Shaun Chase homered for the Ducks against the Dons.

Then Oregon won its second must-win game of the day, 11-0 over Rice. Winning pitcher Jeff Gold allowed only two hits in five shutout innings and Ryon Healy went 4 for 4 with a HR, 4 RBI, and 2 runs scored.

The Ducks and Owls will meet in the Eugene regional championship game Monday night at 6 p.m.
