Nurse called hero for stopping ER gunman

A 48-year-old man walked into the emergency room of St. Vincent Hospital in Portland Thursday morning and told a nurse he wanted drugs.  He pulled a gun and threatened to shoot himself.  The nurse calmly told the man she didn't feel comfortable treating him as long as he had the gun.

She got the man to move into a separate room, where he again threatened himself and she told him she couldn't treat him while he was armed.  He put down the gun.  Another employee took control of the gun and a Sheriff's deputy took the man into custody.

Sheriff's Sergeant Vance Stimler says the nurse is a hero for remaining calm and diffusing what could be become a deadly situation.

The man will be charged with robbery, for demanding the drugs, and unlawful use of a weapon.
