U-turn causes fatal crash

Oregon State Police troopers are continuing the investigation into Friday evening's two-vehicle fatal traffic crash along Highway 18 west of the Spirit Mountain Casino in Polk County.

Just after 6 p.m., a 2000 Ford Focus driven by 19-year-old Alexander Barnes, from Aumsville, was westbound on Highway 18 near milepost 22 when he attempted to make a u-turn. The Ford Focus was struck in the driver's side door by a Ford pickup that was following behind the car.

Barnes died at the scene. A passenger in his car, 22-year-old Matthew Frankenhauser, from Aumsville, was critically injured and transported to Salem Hospital where he is being treated.

The Ford pickup's driver, 32-year-old Dannyelle Mager, from Amity, was not injured. A passenger in the pickup was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

OSP were assisted by Polk County Sheriff's Office, Grand Ronde Police Department, West Valley Fire District, and ODOT. The highway was blocked about 4 hours.
