Wire fraud victim? Moneygram must pay

You fell for it -- the "Nigerian lottery" scheme, the "Grandkid in Trouble" scheme, the "World's Best Investment" scheme -- and you wired money.

The bad news: It's money you'll never see again.

The good news: you might be eligible for some compensation from the company that sent the money.

The wire transfer service Moneygram has made a deal with the U.S. Department of Justice, admitting they played a role in helping those scammers get their hands on your cash by failing to provide appropriate consumer protections. The settlement requires Moneygram to pay out $100 million to victims and hire an independent compliance monitor to make sure they're doing a better job of weeding out criminal activity.

The Oregon Department of Justice has tallied nearly 50 Oregonians who are likely eligible for that compensation. Victims must complete a claim by Nov. 15. To be eligible, you must have been a victim of wire fraud between Jan. 1, 2004 and Aug. 31, 2009.

Details on how to begin the claims process can be found on this website http://www.gilardi.com/moneygram or by phone, 877-282-2610.
